Fiji's internationally known as the soft coral capital of the world. Although soft coral is found elsewhere, you can see more soft coral species in Fiji than anywhere else. Papageno Resort has the incredible advantage of a marine reserve area just off our shores. This reserve provide you with an exceptional opportunity to explore reef life (both barrier and fringe reefs). A snorkeling trip can last up to 2 hours, depending on you wishes. You can expect to see a vibrant and colorful reef possibly swimming with sharks, rays, sea turtles, sea snakes and a lot more.
GREAT ASTROLABE REEF TRIP $ 125 diving - $ 62.50 snorkeling)
The Great Astrolabe Reef is a 110 km long barrier reef, running from the southeastern tip of Kadavu towards the north, around Ono Island and further to the north. It is the third largest barrier reef on earth. Rated as one of the world's premier dive sites, the reef offers an amazing mix of corals (both soft and hard) and large fish such as the gentle behemoths, The Manta Rays. This reef is one of nature's greatest living canvases. Colors swirl amid the emerald green/aqua blue that covers this great, but seldom visited expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It got its name after the French explorer Dumont d'Urvilles collided with the reef in his ship, "The Astrolabe". The area is marked with 8 additional offshore islets, great for picnics and relaxing. Other notable attractions of the reef are swim-throughs, shark-alley, caves and vertical drop-offs to name a few. The visibility varies from 15 to 70 meters (45-210 feet) and is largely dependent on the weather. The best dive sites reachable from Papageno Resort are Naigoro Passage, Ray Bay Reef, the Three Pinnacles and Soso. Due to the distance from Papageno Resort, this trip is always combined with a picnic lunch and is a full day outing. Please ask our PADI-certified staff for advice on the reef’s dive sites. If you want to join us for a snorkel, instead of a dive, you are very welcome to do so.
LONG BEACH PICNIC TRIP $ 25 Per person
Long Beach is the longest sandy beach on Kadavu Island. this beautiful piece of land also belongs to Papageno Resort and is used for our half-day picinic trips. The Beach starts just west from Papageno Resort and extends for another 2.8 km. The nicest point of it is an exceptianally beautiful, palm-fringed peninusula, for where you can see most of Long Beach and Mt. Washington in the far west of Kadavu. Our trip starts in the middle of Long Beach, for where we head into the forest, along a dry riverbed. The trail leads you through an old forest patch. You will find a small freshwater lake in the forest, surrounded by the bare black rocks of an ancient lave flow. From here, your guide takes you to the picnic area on the peninsula, where you can enjoy the natural scenery during your lunch. After a rest and a relaxing beach walk, you can explore the fringing coral reefs of the peninsulas waters. This trip usually lasts 4-5 hours.
ADVENTURE SEA KAYAK TRIP $ 31 Per person
Sea kayaking is one of the most memorable adventure activities that gives you a chance to explore Kadavu's wildlife form a very special perspective. We have designed a one-day guided sea-kayak trip that will take you past mangrove swamps, offshore islands and beautiful bays. You may also want to try to fish for your lunch along the way, but don't worry we'll pack a lunch for you just in case.... You will depart in the morning and will return to the resort before sunset. Longer trips are possible for those who desire more time at sea.

Fiji is home to some famous breaks, and fortunately of them curls right at the tip of our island. Located on the extreme westerly point of Kadavu, there are several breaks that range form beginner waves like Little Daku to advanced breaks like Kong. The breaks sit beneath a beautiful volcano and are so remote you wont have to line for a wave. The departure time and length of the trip depend on the tides and the weather. Please see the activities manager if you are interested in this thrilling adventure.
GOSPEL SINGING $ 9.50 Per person
With the help of a guide, travel by boat to the nearby village of Naivakarauniniu for morning service at the Methodist church where the sermon and singing is in Fijian. And, what singing! Fijian gospel will impress anyone who loves hearing a whole community lift their voices in praise, even if you haven't seen the inside of a church in years. Remember to have a small donation available (F$ 2-5) for the collection plate!
YOGA $ 7 Per person
At Papageno, we have on-site Ashtanga yoga instruction that can be arranged ahead of time. Usually, the classes are offered in the morning and last from one to one and a half hours. All levels from beginner to advanced can be accommodated.
SCHOOL VISIT $ 15.00 Per person
Visit our local school in Vunisei and meet the school children from surrounding villages and their hard-working teachers. Papageno continues to support this school in various ways, and you will be impressed by the bright young minds and smiling faces that will greet you. For parents with young children of your own, this can be a very meaningful exchange for your own children, and a great opportunity for them to meet native Fijian kids of the same age.

Fishing is an exciting and beautiful sunrise or sunset activity at Papageno Resort. Since fishing is most promising in the early morning or late evening, we organize our fishing trips around these times. Guests have caught huge 100 lb. Tuna, Spanish Mackerel, Travelli, Barracuda, Mahi Mahi, Coral Trout &, Parrot Fish. We fish with a variety of trolling lures. Anything you catch will be given to our amazing kitchen staff to prepare just the way you like it ( or let the chefs make a recommendation). Please note we cannot possibly make any guarantee that you fishing trip will be successful, but you will have fun.
NAIVAKARAUNINIU VILLAGE TRIP ($ 12.50 per person) This is a beautiful trip where you can get to know the natural beauties of our forests and costal habitats, and learn by experience about Fijian culture in the nearby village of Naivakarauniniu (Naiva for short). The trip begins with a choice of either hiking (using the same shoreline trail used daily by resort staff) or taking a power boat. Hikers will pass by the village cemetery where the chiefs of old are buried and pass mangrove swamps, creeks and plantations of cassave, taro and kava. Once at the village, your guide will take you to the chief's house, where you will be greeted by the village with a traditional kava-drinking ceremony, and your guide will explain the tradition and customs of the ceremony. After kava, you will have the option of visiting other houses where you can meet the beautiful children and good-hearted people of the village, then visiting the village's plantations, where you will learn about the local crops and the way Fijians grow them. A power boat will meet you at the beach to take you back to Papageno. This trip takes about 3-4 hours.
THE MANTA DISCOVERY $ 125 Per person for a 2 tank dive
Join us for a great day exploring the wonders of the Great Astrolabe Reef as we search for Manta Rays, the graceful giants of the southern seas. At Dive Papageno, we have had a high observation rate of these stellar creatures (some measuring 17 feet from tip to tip) as they seem to enjoy the company of curious humans. Even if you don't manage to see these graceful creatures, you won't be disappointed; the reefs off the southern coast of Kadavu offer some of the best coral diving in the world. Rarely visited, these unspoiled reefs are also among the healthiest in the world. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime two-tank dive opportunity. A three-tank dive might be possible depending on conditions and the number of divers.
WEAVING COURSE $ 19 Per person
At Papageno Resort you can see plenty of wall and floor decorations woven form the leaves of the voivoi plant. These are made by the talented women of Naivakarauniniu Village, who make these "mats" with different designs. They also weave beautiful baskets, so if you would like to learn how to make them and would like to make you own souvenirs, please let us know so that we can orgainze you weaving.
MASSAGE $ 22 Per person
We offer traditional Fijian massage on the beach or in your room. Fijian massage is a relaxing style of massage and is a perfect compliment to your saty at Papageno. Please check for scheduling.
NAIKOROKORO WATERFALLS $ 22 Per person
We offer a half-day excursion to the spectacular cascades of Naikorokoro waterfalls. This series of waterfalls is reached by travelling to the village of Naikorokoro and then heading inland into the mountains on a one kilometer trek that will take you to the first of a series of waterfalls. This guided trip includes lunch, and the chance to swim in the cool, clean waters of the falls.
